He smiled at the memory. "Oh, yeah. Sometimes I felt left out, they were so into each other. But how can you resent a love like that for very long? You just want the same for yourself. Most people would believe I'd gone crazy if I told them this, but since you know the situation, how they died and what happened to me afterward, maybe you can understand."
D.J. opened her mouth to deny such knowledge, but then snapped it shut. She hadn't asked for the truth, but since he wanted to tell her she would listen.
"The day they died, my father made me promise to wait for my soul mate." McCall glanced up, searching D.J.'s face for a reaction. When she stared back without answering he gave a small smile and continued. "I know that sounds hokeybut he believed there is someone for everyone. My parents' marriage showed me he was rightat least in their case. My foster parents' marriage showed me what could happen if you married the wrong person."
Curiosity got the better of D.J., and she asked the question perched on the tip of her tongue, though her rational mind scoffed at her need to know. "Did your father tell you how you're supposed to recognize this person when you find her?"
"He said I'd know. I'd feel it inside."
D.J. remembered Josie telling her the same thing. At the time D.J. had laughed off such an answer as mushy nonsense. But now she wasn't so sure. Maybe McCall's dad had been on to something. Maybe if you believed hard enough, you could make a dream come true.
